Pfizer has been ordered by Australian Customs to stop selling the brand reliever inhaler Ventolin in Australia, despite evidence of an increase in reports of serious respiratory illnesses in the past year.
Pfizer Australia Ltd (PAY) has suspended all sales of the reliever, AstraZeneca's Proventil, following a study into the use of the inhaler.
The company had earlier told its customers that it had been found to be an unreliable and poorly-preventative inhaler. Pfizer has now been fined $8.9 million, with the amount to be paid to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, who will investigate the case.
The investigation into the PPA's use of the inhaler found no evidence of misuse or intentional harm. Pfizer said that it would immediately suspend its marketing of Proventil.
Pfizer said it was aware of the findings but had not received the information as of until today. The company said that it was investigating the issue.
The company has asked the Australian Securities Commission to investigate the case. It has also asked the National Health Service to investigate further.
In its statement, Pfizer said that the decision to suspend sales was taken "due to concerns that the product could be harmful to the patient and could be associated with side effects".
The AstraZeneca spokesman said: "We do not anticipate that the decision to suspend sales will be made voluntarily by the public and will continue to make such decisions under the guidance of the company and regulatory authorities."
